Karla Tovar is from Fresno, California.
She started playing mariachi music in high school alongside a very demanding career in softball. As an athlete, she traveled the United States winning many tournaments and then playing for Fresno City College on a full scholarship. While she could have played softball professionally, she decided her love of music was far greater.
As one of the few women that play guitarron, Karla had exceeded everyone’s perception of what a female bass player could do. She continues to be outplay many men in the profession and strives to be the best. Karla Tovar received a Bachelors of Art Degree in Chican@ Studies at the University of California at Riverside. At UCR, she graduated with honors, was a member of Latinas Societas Unidas, the LGBT organization, and continues to work on a project for COINTELPRO inmates. A civil and gender rights activist, Karla dedicates herself to the improvement of Chicanas. She is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Chican@ Studies. She has been with Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles for eight years.
