Judith Kamel

18. April, 2013

Judith Kamel was born in Lakeview Terrace, California and reared in the Long Beach area. I am first generation Mexican-American, my mother is from Chihuahua, Mexico, my father from Mexico City. I began studying classical piano at age 8, and continued until age 16. I attended the Orange County High School for the Arts, where my concentration was musical theater. I fell in love with mariachi music at age 16, when my father took me to a mariachi festival in Las Vegas where Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, and Aida Cuevas were the headliners. Feeling the need to become a part of this incredible music, I began taking voice lessons at the Mariachi Heritage Society. Two years later, upon graduating from high school at age 18, I began learning to play rhythm guitar . I attended UCLA, where I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Ethnomusicolgy and Spanish literature. In 1999, I joined Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, and have been part of the group ever since. I currently work as a lonshoreman at the Los Angeles/Long Beach port.
